2024 Ladies Macabi Club

17 WOMEN. 1 EPIC ADVENTURE. ZERO LIMITS

Last September we packed our fly rods and headed to paradise- 17 ladies, most of whom were new to salt water fly fishing, bound for the turquoise waters of Belize. From the moment we stepped off the plane in San Pedro, El Pescador Lodge had us covered- handing us ice cold Belikins while we boarded private water taxis that cruised us across glassy seas. As we cruised toward the lodge we couldn't help but marvel at the beauty around us, vibrant blue skies and an endless expanse of turquoise stretching out into the horizon, it was like stepping into a dream.  El Pescador Lodge welcomed us like old friends. You didn't need to be a pro to be here. This trip was all about stepping out of the ordinary, creating lasting friendships and chasing fish most people only ever hear stories about.

After a breezy check- in, with tropical cocktails in hand we hit the dock for a casting lesson to shake off the travel dust and get us ready for the flats.   Mariano, El Pescador's Fishing Director and total legend, worked with each of us on our cast giving us gentle pointers to improve our distance. Each evening El Pescador offers free casting clinics, giving everyone a chance to fine-tune their skills and prepare for the next day's big catch. Mariano showed us a map of the Island, giving us a full breakdown of the surrounding waters- bonefish flats, permit spots, tarpon haunts, and the best mangrove spots for snagging a snook.  That evening over a family style feast of fresh lobster, shrimp and local favorites we swapped stories, made new friends and eagerly prepped for whatever the next morning would bring.

At dawn we split into two waves of boats, the first out at 5:30 am and the second out at 6:30 am,  breakfast burritos in hand and target species on the brain.  Our guides met us dockside to talk strategy, and the fly shop crew made sure everyone had the right set up.  No gear? No problem, El Pescador hooked us up with complimentary rods and reels.

And the fishing? Let's just say we crushed it!

  • 8 Permit
  • 4 Tarpon
  • 35 Bonefish
  • 6 Jack

From first casts to final toasts, it was more than a trip- it was a full-on fly-fishing sisterhood in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
